Articles About RV Problems and Modifications
Over the years I have owned several RVs. You can see some photos and statistics in this article, Good Times on the Road.RVs always have problems. Mostly they are minor but occasionally a manufacturer makes a major mistake. There are also tweaks that RV owners like to make to their rigs. This area of my website details all the problems and modifications I have made to various RVs over the years.

Laptop Computer MountForest River Wildcat > Truck Modifications The toys I have had the most fun with in a long time are my GPS and laptop computer. I dreamed up a way of mounting my laptop in my truck. I started out with a crude idea and kept tweaking it until it actually works very well.

Generator CordForest River Wildcat > Truck Modifications The only way to get the full 2800 watts from my Honda generator is to use the 30 amp twist lock outlet. I have a setup that works well with my generator in the back of the truck.

Converter SwitchForest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications On a recent trip out west I used my Honda EU3000i generator every day. It powered my 13,500 air conditioner, the power converter, the refrigerator and a crock pot. Everything worked fine except for one hot day near Page Arizona when the generator kicked out due to overload a couple of times.

Flip Up TableForest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications I never really used the flip up shelf in the bedroom for a TV. I heard that some folks had moved it into the kitchen area and mounted it to the side of the sink cabinet for extra counter top space. So I did the same thing.

Leaking Front CapForest River Wildcat > Problems The corner trim on the front cap starts at the top, goes down the corner, under the over hang to the vertical wall under the under hang and then down the corner to the bottom of this wall. One morning after a heavy dew I noticed water dripping from the trim at the bottom corner of the vertical wall.

16 Inch TiresForest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications I have never been satisfied with the 15 inch tires on my Wildcat. With a load rating of 2540 pounds they are often running close to their rated capacity if the road is crowned in the middle, there is a cross wind, the Wildcat is not being towed level, etc. I also had problems with two of the OEM tires with one of them exploding at freeway speeds.

Inspecting Hubs and Grease SealsForest River Wildcat > Other Stuff Inspect hubs, electric brakes, repack wheel bearings, replace grease seals

Door to Under Couch Storage AreaForest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications The area under the couch is a great place to store large bulky items like sleeping bags, pillows, etc. But the latch used in the Wildcat is a pain to use.

Corner ProtectorsForest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications The Wildcat has real hardwoods in some high use areas like counter tops and cabinet doors. However there are some other areas that get abuse that have only the vinyl covered stuff. I found a way to protect those soft corners.

Outside ShowerForest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications My Wildcat did not come with the outside shower and I did not think I needed one. Then I took my boys to the beach and to Kill Devil Hills at the Outer Banks. I found out quickly that I needed an outside shower. Here is how I installed one.

Stove Hood Exhaust VentForest River Wildcat > Problems The fan in the hood above my stove does not exhaust the heat outside. It simply blows the air back to the inside. This makes absolutely no sense to me. So I added an exhaust vent.

Voltage MeterForest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications Some campgrounds are fairly old and the electrical system may not be able to handle the power that modern RVs consume. Also since I run my generator often I like to know that it is putting out sufficient voltage. I got the meter in the photo below from Camping World.

Refrigerator VentilationForest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications A few months after I purchased my Wildcat my refrigerator stopped working. My dealer replaced it under warranty and everything seemed fine until I took a 2 week trip to the western states. The fridge cooled fine when parked and at speeds up to about 55 MPH. But travel any faster and the fridge would start to warm up.

Fresh Water Fill Hose ConnectorForest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications I like to travel with a full tank of water. We use quite a bit during the day and I have stayed at several state park type campgrounds where there is power but no water at the campsite. So every morning while breaking camp someone has to stand and hold the water hose in the filler neck.

Fridge FanForest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications I had a 12v fan from a computer case I was not using. These things are designed to run for a very long time. The fan was enclosed in a plastic housing. It was designed to force air through a computer case. The fan runs while the door is shut but shuts off when the door is open. The trick is to wire the fan across the switch for the light.
