Articles About RV Problems and Modifications

Over the years I have owned several RVs. You can see some photos and statistics in this article, Good Times on the Road.

RVs always have problems. Mostly they are minor but occasionally a manufacturer makes a major mistake. There are also tweaks that RV owners like to make to their rigs. This area of my website details all the problems and modifications I have made to various RVs over the years.

Wire Shelves in Cabinets

Forest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications
The overhead cabinet storage above the sink is great in the Wildcat. However there is a lot of wasted space because the cabinet is very tall with no shelves.

Storage Drawers

Forest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications
For the right front basement storage area I made a drawer to hold things I may need after setting up camp such as toys, shovels, fire starters, ax, etc.

Truck Side Step

Forest River Wildcat > Truck Modifications
Climbing into the bed of my Dodge 2500 4x4 truck is difficult especially when hooked to my Wildcat. Then I have to climb over the side and can not climb over the tail gate from the rear step bumper. My Dad and I designed a solution.

Extra Water Pump Switch

Forest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications
One of my quirks is I do not like to travel with the water pump on. 40 gallons of water inside from a loose fitting or faucet left running would ruin my day so I always turn it off when we hit the road again. I installed a convenient switch beside the main door.

CB Antenna

Forest River Wildcat > Truck Modifications
I debated quite a bit on where to mount a CB antenna. I did not want the roof magnetic mount because I did now want the cord hanging over the back of the cab and they often don't hold well.

Window Tint

Forest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications
My Wildcat came with the 13,500 air conditioner. It really needs the 15,000 unit. On a warm humid 100 degree day the air conditioner can't quite keep up with the heat so I added window tint.

Running Generator Indicator

Forest River Wildcat > Truck Modifications
My Honda EU3000i generator runs so quiet I can not hear it inside the truck, even if I roll down the windows. I like to know whether the generator is running or not.

TV That Fits

Forest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications
Several people have asked in an online Wildcat forum what size TV will fit in the entertainment area.

Honda EU3000i Weather Proof Cover

Forest River Wildcat > Other Stuff
I recently purchased a Honda EU3000i generator. During summer travel I run a generator all day to power the air conditioner in my Wildcat so restroom breaks and lunch can be enjoyed in comfort and also to power a crock pot for the evening meal. I wanted some way to protect the generator from the weather.

Worn Spring Shackles

Forest River Wildcat > Problems
With the purchase of a new 4x4 Dodge Cummins 2500 truck my Wildcat was too high in the front. While adding metal blocks between the axles and springs to raise the Wildcat I noticed the right spring shackles looked strange. I removed them to find that they were severely worn.

Metal Lift Blocks Between the Axles and Springs

Forest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications
With the purchase of a new 4x4 Dodge Cummins 2500 truck my Wildcat was too high in the front. I can not adjust the fifth wheel hitch lower in the truck without running the risk of hitting the truck bed rails so I decided to put lift blocks between the axle and springs.

Splash Guards for the Shower

Forest River Wildcat > Inside Modifications
I had trouble with water getting on the floor when I took a shower in my Forest River Wildcat. Even with the curtain pulled tightly against the walls, water would run along the top of the tub to the edge and into the floor.

Lift Eyes for the Front Landing Jacks

Forest River Wildcat > Outside Modifications
There is no good way to grab the jacks and raise them when hooking up. Also, the jack feet are sometimes in wet dirt and it is almost impossible to raise the jack feet without getting your hands dirty.

Exploding Carlisle Tires

Forest River Wildcat > Problems
Several people have had trouble with the Carlisle tires on their Wildcats. I had one explode while traveling about 70 mph on a busy interstate. That was interesting. I just thought it was one of those things and replaced the tire myself.

Storage Shelter for the Wildcat

Forest River Wildcat > Other Stuff
I think that a sheltered RV will last longer than one that is unsheltered. Before I got this shelter, every time there was a strong rain storm I worried if I had a leak in the RV and where it was leaking.
