Departure for a North West USA Road Trip

Jul 1, 1984 Sun0
In the early 80's I traveled to a few places and kept a travel diary. I thought my sons would some day enjoy reading my diary so I have decided to put it in my blog. I will enter my diary here as I wrote it years ago when I was a much younger man. I was 24 years old in 1984. At this time in my life I was traveling to Toronto Canada every week and I got bumped from a flight. Delta gave me a free ticket to any place they flew in the 48 states. I looked at their route map and the farthest I could fly was Seattle, Washington. So I packed my bags, tent and sleeping bag and headed West. I drove around the North West for a week.

10:44AM I'm cruising at 41,000 feet above Evansville, Indiana in Delta's new Boeing 767 jet. The sky is just now clearing enough to see the ground clearly. We never fly this high going to Toronto. Had trouble at RDU. We swung out onto the runway in a Tri-Star 1011 and I waited for the pilot to open it up. But he only went to about 1/2 throttle. Half way down the runway he aborted the takeoff and went back to the taxiway. He then went to the end of the taxiway and revved the engines for 15 minutes.

During this time he was in contact with maintenance men in Atlanta. He said they solved the problem and we took off ok. Initially he had said that one of the gauges did not look quite right. On this flight before I moved to get a seat with a better view I talked with a woman from Greensboro going to Seattle to visit a daughter and three brothers. She was a traveling farmers market. She had cakes, peaches, melons, plants, jam and I can't remember what else. And she carried it all on board. This flight has a movie 'Romancing the Stone' and I think we will get a meal.

Just finished breakfast. I had the standard breakfast on the flight from RDU to Atlanta. This one was pretty good complete with fresh oranges, grapefruit and champagne.

The air keeps getting clearer, less pollution, less people. Saw some mountains in western NC this morning.

12:41PM Land looks very barren. Very little green. Reminds me of the Badlands of South Dakota. This may be Wyoming.

1:15PM Just flew over the continental divide. Those were the Badlands. We just flew over Yellowstone.
