Today
We got up early to avoid the local traffic and headed to the beach. We actually did this crazy thing. Rode Silvia from coast to coast in 11 days. Through rain, wind, cold, rain again, snow and finally California traffic.
We left Chula Vista the fastest way we could find. Just too much traffic after all those days in the wide open spaces. There must be protected space just east of Chula Vista or maybe everyone wants to live with an ocean view. But it did not take long to get out of the city. We were very surprised by the cool temperatures. A little light mist did not dampen our enjoyment of the views.
However the gas prices are insane. We paid $4.49 per gallon at one point and in Arizona we paid around $2.50.
The ride to Casa Grande, AZ was easy with temps around 80. I do want to remind our riding friends to avoid riding behind pickup trucks as you never know what will fly out of the bed. In this case it was a kitchen cabinet. We were maybe 3 minutes behind the mishap. A fellow had the cabinets in the open bed and they appeared to be tied down ok, but we ran over the pieces of one in the road. A car was off to the side with the plastic ripped off the rear bumper so he probably tried to miss the cabinet but still nicked it.
Around Calexico CA we started noticing in the fields just south of the freeway there was a Border Patrol and Enforcement vehicle about every half mile or so. The Mexican border is about 5 miles south of the freeway. We also saw 6 military helicopters flying low with the guns and missile launchers. Later I read online that President Trump was in El Cenro just north of there and was going to Calexico, so we assumed everything was related to his visit.
