We Just Wanted a Pecan Log Roll From Stuckeys

Jul 3, 2016 Sun0Route 66

When we travelled as a kid we often stopped at Stuckeys to get fuel and their peanut brittle. I think they may have given something free on a fill up but I really don't remember. Laurie has memories of getting a pecan roll with her parents when they travelled the South West.

So when we saw a sign for Stuckeys that did not look too faded we took the exit. On the overpass was a broken down truck and trailer with a tow truck about to hook up. We barely got by them.

Then sadness. The Stuckeys had burned down. And there were barriers so we could not circle the wagons and get back on I-40. Plus there was that broken down RV and tow truck to pass again.

So we decided to take the "scenic route" via the frontage road and work our way down to the next intersection with I-40. I just assumed the frontage road would cross I-40 on an overpass. I was wrong.

After several miles the road took a dip down and to the right with no space to turn around. The frontage road went under I-40 through what looked like a drainage tunnel. But the height limit was a little above my RV so with Greg on the roof to check clearance I drove through.

It turned out to be no big deal and was a neat experience. We saw a dead rattle snake, some bird mud nests in the tunnel and picked up some used railroad spikes.

After the tunnel we were back on old Route 66. We passed a cemetery and had to stop to take a look and get some photos.

It was a perfect vacation experience.
